Will a rinse help? Can I wait? Before trying remedies, you need to decide whether there are warning signs. Then you can look for temporary relief while you arrange an evaluation to treat the cause.

First: recognize when you need immediate care

Seek emergency hospital care if you have trouble breathing, swallowing or speaking, or swelling around the eye or in the neck. These signs should not wait for a pain reliever to work (National Health Service, 2024).

Pain that does not improve with pain relievers, fever, pain when biting, or swelling of the cheek or jaw need a prompt dental evaluation. An adult can try a warm salt-water rinse and spit it out; it should not be swallowed. These measures are for comfort while you wait for care (National Health Service, 2024).

Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum: it can injure the tissue. Do not use needles or sharp objects to try to remove something stuck between your teeth either (American Dental Association, n.d.).

Home measures do not identify what is causing the pain. Keep your appointment even if you feel better, and ask for guidance if your symptoms change.

What to ask at the pharmacy about medication

This section is for adults. Dental pain recommendations list nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, alone or combined with acetaminophen, among the first options for temporary relief. The choice depends on your history, contraindications and other medications; definitive dental treatment is still needed (Green et al., 2025).

Ask for guidance by active ingredient and bring the names of what you have already taken. Follow the professional’s instructions and the package label: products vary. For children, pregnancy or other special situations, ask for individual advice.

Ibuprofen: may not be appropriate if you have a history of ulcers, kidney disease, certain allergies, bleeding problems or pregnancy. It can also interact with anticoagulants and other medications. Do not combine ibuprofen with another anti-inflammatory, such as naproxen, on your own (National Health Service, 2025).

Acetaminophen, also called paracetamol: check whether another product you use already contains it, such as some cold medicines. Doubling up can lead to an excessive amount. If you have liver or kidney disease, drink significant amounts of alcohol or take other treatments, ask before using it. If you took more than directed, seek urgent medical advice (National Health Service, 2026).

Do I need an antibiotic?

Do not start one on your own. The ADA guideline advises against antibiotics for many pulpal and periapical conditions and prioritizes treating the dental source. If the infection causes systemic symptoms, such as fever or feeling unwell, a professional should assess whether an antibiotic is indicated along with treatment. Pain alone is not a reason to choose an antibiotic (American Dental Association, 2019).

A medication that reduces discomfort can help you get through the next few hours; it does not replace the procedures needed to resolve the cause (Green et al., 2025).

Arrive with information that helps decide

Write down when the pain started, whether it is constant or comes and goes, what triggers it and whether swelling or fever appear.
