You understood part of it, but when you try to explain it at home, questions come up: “Does this include everything?” “Is there another option?” “What happens next?” You don’t need to memorize technical terms to decide. You need an explanation that connects the problem, the alternatives and the aftercare.

Start with the diagnosis, not the price

Ask what was found, which tests support that conclusion and what the treatment is meant to solve. If they point to an image, ask them to explain what you are looking at. The ADA describes dental care as an individualized service and advises talking with your dentist, asking questions and taking notes (American Dental Association, n.d.).

You can say: “Before we talk about the procedure, could you explain what the problem with this tooth is?” That question helps organize the conversation. Then clarify what is known and what still needs to be evaluated; a plan that is still provisional should be understood as such.

Know the alternatives and their limits

The NICE guideline on shared decision-making recommends discussing the benefits, risks and consequences of the options, including the possibility of not starting an intervention or keeping the current plan when appropriate (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2021). Ask what would change between keeping a tooth, restoring it or replacing it, depending on the alternatives appropriate for your diagnosis.

Also talk about what matters to you: eating comfortably, organizing visits or keeping a cleaning routine you can manage. A Cochrane review found that decision aids improve knowledge and understanding of risks in health decisions. They complement the professional conversation; those results do not on their own show better dental outcomes or lower costs (Stacey et al., 2024).

Compare the full scope of the estimate

The AHRQ tool on costs recommends explaining them in advance, covering the full course when there are several sessions and considering indirect expenses, such as transportation or time off work (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2024).

Ask for a document that identifies procedures, currency, stages and inclusions. For example: “Does this figure go all the way to the final restoration, or does it only cover the first stage?” Ask about check-ups, adjustments and possible additional costs. Two proposals with the same name do not necessarily describe the same scope.

If implants are included, keep the brand and model of the system used, as the FDA recommends (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2021). That information is part of understanding and keeping the details of your treatment.

Clarify who continues your care

NICE recommends agreeing on the next steps, their timing, when the plan will be reviewed and whom to contact with questions (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2021). Bring that conversation to your dental treatment: who performs each stage, which date is confirmed and what instructions you will receive when you leave.

If you are traveling, ask which check-ups require an in-person visit and how care would be arranged while you are away. Ask them to distinguish follow-up contacts from options for an emergency; don’t assume around-the-clock availability just because you have a phone number.

Six questions to bring in writing

What problem did you find, and how did you confirm it?

Which alternatives are appropriate for my case?

What are the benefits, risks and limitations of each option?

What does the estimate include, and what could change it?

How many stages are planned, and who does each one?

What will the check-ups be like, and whom do I contact afterwards?

Before accepting, summarize the plan in your own words and ask them to correct anything that is off. If you still have important doubts, ask for clarification or consider a second opinion, also asking how urgent the problem is. This series helps you prepare for the appointment; the diagnosis and the decision are built together with the professional. You can go back to the first evaluation, the implant estimate or the guide to verifying a clinic.

Want us to review your case? At The Special Teeth we see patients in English and Spanish, about 10 minutes from the San Ysidro border crossing, and we accept Aetna and MetLife PPO dental insurance.
