Why Is My Root Canal $3,000? What the Price Includes and Your Options
If you were quoted an expensive root canal, learn what changes the price, why the total often includes more than the root canal itself, and what to ask.
Short answer: the price of a root canal depends on the tooth, how complex the case is and who performs it. On top of that, many estimates combine the root canal, the buildup and the crown into a single total. Before deciding, ask for an itemized breakdown.
What makes a root canal cost more
- The tooth: molars have more canals and are harder to treat than front teeth, so they usually cost more (American Association of Endodontists, n.d.-b).
- Complexity: curved or narrow canals, a severe infection or a retreatment take more time and technique (American Association of Endodontists, n.d.-b).
- Who does it: endodontists have additional training and use specialized imaging and instruments (American Association of Endodontists, n.d.-b).
What is often included in the total
After a root canal, the tooth needs a restoration. For back teeth, such as molars and premolars, a crown is often recommended to protect them from fracture (American Association of Endodontists, n.d.-b). The European Society of Endodontology notes that how a tooth is restored depends on how much healthy structure remains and where it sits in the mouth (Mannocci et al., 2021). Read whether you always need a crown after a root canal.
That is why an estimate may include:
- Root canal treatment.
- Post or core buildup.
- Crown.
Reference prices at The Special Teeth (USD)
| Item | Reference price |
|---|---|
| Root canal treatment | $300 |
| Root canal retreatment | $350 |
| Post and core buildup | $150 |
| Zirconia crown | from $450 |
| E.max crown | from $550 |
Indicative prices; cost may vary by tooth and diagnosis, and the final estimate is provided in writing after your evaluation (The Special Teeth, 2026).
What if I just have it pulled?
The American Association of Endodontists explains that, in general, saving the tooth with a root canal and restoration costs less than extracting it and replacing it with an implant or a bridge (American Association of Endodontists, n.d.-c). Read how the decision to save or extract a tooth is made.
If you have dental insurance
What you pay depends on your plan, on what your insurer considers a reasonable fee and on your annual maximum (American Association of Endodontists, n.d.-a). With Aetna or MetLife PPO plans, The Special Teeth bills your insurer directly. See how it works.
Questions to ask before you accept
- Does the price include the buildup and the crown?
- Who will do the treatment: a general dentist or an endodontist?
- How many visits will I need?
- What happens if the case turns out to be more complex than expected?
